I call it the 'Growlerski', it is an electronic warfare variant of the SU-30 MKM that has the ability to disrupt or jam a range of military electronics systems, including radars and communications systems.
Enter the shadowy glimpse of Royal Malaysian Air Force SEAD operations. Its the morning of the Perarakan Raksasa HUT ATM ke 80. Every eyes stares upon the greatness of the air show. None notice the single Super Flanker that flew in formation of four Su-30MKM.
Not untill the next day when the first picture of the formation uploaded in the internet, that military enthusiast around the world noticed. A single Super Flanker with a pair of enourmous pod on each wings. An American aviationist, casually note in his blog:
And Behold now confirmed, an Su-30MKM with a pair of KNIRTI SAP-518 on each end of its wing. Ever gracefully bank right and disappear among the tall buildings of Kuala Lumpur."hey .. Malaysia are revealing its never before seen airborne ECM system.."
The SAP-518 is an advanced jamming pod intended for heavy strike fighters such as Russian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MK, and Su-32/34 and Indian Air Force Su-30MKI. Its primary mission is to jam advanced air defenses during ground attack missions imitating electronic signatures of various aircraft while generating false targets within enemy sensors. The SAP-518 covers NATO surface-to-air and air-to-air threats in the G-J bands and is deployed in two underwing or wingtip pods. Installed on a single aircraft along with the SAP-14 jamming pod is considered similar to the United States ALQ-99 jamming system installed on the EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft. The electronic warfare system has been developed and manufactured by the Kaluzhsky Scientific Research Radio-Technical Institute (KNIRTI).
It was rumoured that in 2010 Malaysia had the option between choosing the French PAJ FA and the Russian SAP-518. Apparently it is confirmed now that the SAP 518 was selected.
That being said the next question asked is "does Malaysia have the SAP 14 Standoff Jammer?"
A mock-up of the SAP 14 pod was displayed during MAKS 2009.
Originally an EW variant of the side-by-side Flanker was associated well over a decade ago with the Su-27PP designation. A model of an Su-27IB/Su-34 has also been shown on several occasions fitted with four EW pods carried on wing stations.
Although using Russian made weapon system, the RMAF are known to use NATO tactics and strategies. So it is interesting to know in what way the combination of the EW/SU-30MKM and the russian The Kh-31P anti-radiation missile will work out.
The missile provides the RMAF with an advanced medium-range standoff anti-radiation strike capability, which was not previously possessed by the force. The Kh-31P was originally developed for the Soviet Air Force specifically against the U.S. Patriot air defence missile system. The missile is capable of suppressing enemy air defence systems and make its early warning ‘blind’ by striking their radar.
A single Growlerski not only can counter enemy air defenses using both reactive and pre-emptive jamming techniques but also highly effective in the traditional stand-off jamming mission. That and it is confidently capable of defending itself with the variety of air to air missile such as the R-77 BVR AAM.
Impression of EW/SU-30MKM and its deadly arsenal of weaponry.
Well the Perarakan Raksasa also brought to us the ever illusive RVV-AE Missile... THREE OF THEM. Must be the one that have since reach its expire dates, since Malaysia bought another 35 of it. In totall (if SIPRI didnt lie) Malaysia have 185 RVV-AE missiles.
In conclusion Salud to Royal Malaysian Air Force SU-30MKM pilots, krew and everyone in the team. Go Kick em Arse
