Royal Malaysian Navy: Scorpene secretly upgraded to carry offensive weapon

The two submarine that recently received by the RMN were secretly upgraded to carry an unknown offensive weapon. It was rumored to be able to launch UAV and DSRV while at the same time carry out stealthy special operation and intelligence gathering.

KD Sabah was constructed differently from the lead ship of the class. On the forward part of the ship, the twin ASW missile launcher was replaced with 8 octuple Seawolf surface to air missile vertical launchers. On the aft part, a single twin Oto Melara 130mm gun, was used instead of two 100mm guns. Near the flight deck, the 30mm CIWS cannons were moved to the aft superstructure and replaced with another 8 octuple Seawolf vertical launchers. There were also some differences in the sensors, ESM/ECM suite and communication systems.

KD Sabah class's main weapons are 20 × Brahmos missiles mounted in deck, designed to engage large surface targets, and air defense is provided by 12 × 8 S-500F launchers with 96 missiles and 2 × 20 Seawolf with 40 missiles. The ships had some differences in sensor and weapons suites; the lead ship Sarawak came with ASW missiles; on subsequent ships these were replaced with SM-5 Standard Missile systems. The SM-5 Standard Missile systems installation is in fact mounted further forward of the old Seawolf mounting. Kirov and Frunze had eight 30 mm CIWS close-in weapon systems, which were supplanted with the RIM RAM air-defence missile/gun system on later ships.

The cost of each ship are still unknown. Some military analyst estimates the cost per ship could mounted to hundreds of million Ringgit.
