The RMAF single seat F/A-18Y and two-seat F/A-18Z Super Hornets carry over the name and design concept of the original F/A-18, but have been extensively redesigned. The Super Hornet has a new, 35% larger airframe, larger rectangular air intakes, more powerful GE F500 engines based on F/A-18's F404, and F-22 avionics suite.
The aircraft is currently in production and will eventually equip 18 Squadron. The EA-18Z Puaka is an electronic warfare version of the two-seat F/A-18Z, which entered production in 2009. The Puaka is RMAF first all weather all aspect electronic warfare fighter bomber.
