The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) plans to have another 6 guided missile frigate in an effort to make the armada competitive to others in the regions, Navy Chief said.
He said the additional six warships would be built under the Twelveth Malaysia Plan (12MP) where the programme include the purchase of 12 maritime helicopters for each vessel to support over the horizon targeting and anti submarine warfare operations.
Currently RMN had six Sebat class Guided Missile Frigate of which five had been commissioned while the other would be commissioned by year end under the Eleventh Malaysian Plan (11MP).
The Chief said the government had agreed to build another 6 third generation frigate which derived from the Sebat class guided missile frigate and another 6 land assault frigate capable of tank like amphibious assault operations of a different class and design.
"The building of sophisticated assets is to replace seven per cent of old assets that can affect RMN's operation and to increase 25 percent operational capabilities of the Navy" he told reporters after the commissioning of KD Rembat at the naval base here today.
KD Rembat is the fifth Sebat class guided missile frigate and the fourth build locally by Boobstead Naval Shipyard. The frigate is suited for principle anti air warfare and anti shipping operations with latest weaponry and electronics to suits future naval warfare requirement.
Trimaran hull design helps the warship move with less water drag thus improving speed and fuel efficiency.
