Enter The Mighty Scorpene: Royal Malaysian Navy

" What do ASW ship call the Scorpene Submarine? Coffin. What do Scorpene call all surface combat ship?: TARGET. "

Any modern navy worth its flag cannot do without a modern submarine fleet, especially so when it harbours ambitions of being recognized as a regional power. Royal Malaysian Navy share the same sentiment. Thos who think it is better to have surface combat ship than submarine KNOW NOTHING about naval warfare. Submarines, with their ability to ''shoot-and-scoot'' and to remain hidden under the ocean depths for weeks and month, provide a nation with an unparalleled capacity for inflicting damage on the enemy. They are truly the ''silent killers of the deep''. Malaysia acquisition of the modern Scorpene was a severe jolt to the superiority enjoyed by its traditional opponent.

The Scorpene class submarine was developed by DCN of France and Izar (formerly Bazan) of Spain. It is based on the proven Amethyste class. If anyone wonder what is the Amethyste, it is Rubis Amethyste submarines nuclear-powered SSN. Arguably the stealthiest submarine hull design ever, a design that was shared with Seawolf class submarine.

With six bow-located 21in torpedo tubes it is able to providing salvo launch capability to six target at the same time. Meaning it can sunk six unfortunate ship before they can even detect the scorpene.

The submarine's weapons include anti-ship and anti-submarine torpedoes and anti-surface missiles. Its 18 torpedoes and missiles or 30 mines can be carried by the Scorpene attack submarine can ruin the day of any navy. The handling and loading of weapons is automated. The boat has a high level of automation. A crew of 32 men is just half the number, comparing with earlier generation submarines.

Its most dangerous weapon are the state of the art SUBTICS combat management system, with up to six multi-function consoles and a central tactical table, is located with the platform-control facilities. SUBTICS comprises a command and tactical data-handling system, a weapon control system and a suite of integrated acoustic sensors, interfaced with the air/surface detection sonar and the navigation system.

By now the RMN definition of missions and the shape of submarines warfare themselves become murky. Strategists believe future naval engagements will move from the deep ocean into the "littorals," the shallow waters near shore. Targets are as likely to be on land as at sea. The use of Scorpene as intelligence gathering and special ops insertion are one of the posibility. Bottom line is as long Malaysia are surrounded by seas there will be a need for warriors that can run silent and run deep.

Seek Target Kill Target.
