GEMAS, May 12 (Bernama) -- The MiG-29 Fulcrum jet fighters will continue to fly although the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has received its latest Sukhoi Su-30MKM aircraft in a different atmosphere, literally.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there were no plans to retire the the MiG-29 jet fighters which have seen 15 years of service, instead we are upgrading it.
The Air Force has begun a major organizational and technical shift to strengthen its use of space for national security purposes. Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi presented details about the transformation of the Malaysia space plans February 7 in a Putrajaya briefing. He also serves as Director of the National Space Warfare and Reconnaissance Aparatus Agency. (NSWRAA)
Deemed critical to utilization of space for national security purposes is assured access to space, Zahid emphasized, and the nation's ability to protect space assets.
Zahid said that discussions are underway with NSWRAA to combine military space plane interest with the space agency's Space Launch Initiative (SLI). The intent is to create a reusable launch vehicle (RLV). Hence the MiG-29N will be upgraded and re designated S-MIG-2020 Space Assault Vehicle (SAVY)
Modifications were made at a LOT plant in the town of Parit Sontor. As a result, MiG fighter jets have been adapted to OUTER Space standards. It was achieved by including advance modern computer, navigation, landing and radio systems and new identification equipment into the on-board electronic equipment of the jets. The MiG acted as an integrator, while systems and devices were supplied by leading companies of the above-mentioned countries. Petronas Group, Aerod Aerospace Lightning Systems were among other firms participating in the upgrade of MiG-29 jets.
